Ever increasing numbers of studies address the likely level of protection provided by various forms of personal protective equipment (PPE) especially respiratory protective equipment (RPE). Over the years various guidance documents issued have assigned protection factors to the different types of RPE. As RPE testing has advanced there has been a general reduction in protection factors. One of the critical issues influencing the effectiveness of RPE in the workplace is the correctness of fit. Traditionally reliance has been placed on qualitative tests. 4Front now offers QUANTITATIVE fit testing using HSE and OSHA approved testing protocols.

Quantitative fit testing is the most reliable assessment of whether or not the respiratory protective device an individual is wearing is a suitable fit for that individual. Without successfully completing a fit test, dependence cannot be placed upon respiratory protective equipment as an effective form of control.

  • Quantitative fit testing provides a numerical measure of the fit that is called a FIT FACTOR. These tests give an objective measure of the face fit.
  • The FIT FACTOR (FF) is a measure of how well a particular face piece seals against the wearer's face.
  • The FIT FACTOR should not be confused with the Assumed Protection Factor (APF).

When should fit testing be carried out?

  • As part of the initial selection of the RPE.
  • Where an untested face-piece is already in use.
  • In the course of respirator fit training.
  • To conform to best practice.

4Front provides independent on site/off site quantitative fit testing services. We do not supply respiratory protective equipment and hence can offer impartial advice on the most suitable device to best fit the individual as part of our service.

4Front provides an individual test certificates for all successful respirator fit test.
